Janis Park
“Disco Fever,” the newest release from the emerging artist, Janis Park, arrives with a backstory as unconventional as its shimmering sound. The track was originally created as an entry for a topliner audition at NewType Entertainment, a prominent Kpop music publisher. At the time, the artist viewed it as a long shot writing in Korean felt unrealistic, and the demo was never intended to move beyond the audition stage. Everything changed when early listeners, including close friends and family, reacted with an immediate, visceral enthusiasm. Their response pushed the artist to pursue rights to the composition, despite having no connections within the Kpop industry. A chance reconnection from a prior acquaintance in Los Angeles set the journey in motion. Grammy winning engineer Bob Horn, with whom Janis had worked with before on cover songs such as Adele’s “One and Only,” introduced the artist to DK, the producer behind Lee Hyori’s iconic hit “10 Minutes.” DK instantly gravitated toward the demo, noting its nostalgic resemblance to early-2000s Jpop BoA a comparison that later inspired the track’s concept cover. DK also happened to be close friends with NewType’s president, Sejin Park, and with one phone call, the artist secured the rights they had assumed were out of reach. “Disco Fever” is built on a composition by NewType producer Malcha, whose jpop sensibilities and jazz piano background form the song’s foundation. The lyrical concept emerged from isolating a guitar loop reminiscent of the Bee Gees’ “Stayin’ Alive,” originally highlighted in a slowed bridge of the composition. During studio sessions at Bean Entertainment in Korea, the bridge was recut to match the track’s dance driven energy, with added electric guitar and keyboard stems to amplify its Nintendo inspired nu-disco aesthetic. The final section of the song was freestyled before being transcribed into full lyrics.
