Arctic Lights are an Irish alternative rock project featuring Edward Butt and Liam O’Callaghan. The duo create music that sits somewhere between alternative rock, shoegaze and dream pop. Their songs explore darker themes of love, loss, escape and the fragile spaces in between, pairing immersive soundscapes with emotionally charged songwriting. Arctic Lights is music for the moments when the lights go down and the world feels a little less certain. Arctic Lights are an alternative rock duo from Cork, Ireland, comprising Liam O’Callaghan and Edward Butt. Since emerging in 2021 with their debut single ‘King of America’, the duo have built a distinctive catalogue of music that refuses to sit comfortably within any one genre. Blending alternative rock, indie, electronic, shoegaze and experimental influences, Arctic Lights have developed a sound characterised by strong melodies, atmospheric arrangements, distorted guitars and an adventurous approach to songwriting. Their music has continued to evolve with each release, from the melodic indie-rock of their early work to the darker, heavier and more experimental territory explored on later singles such as ‘Holy Joe’, ‘Melting’, ‘MaNTIS’, ‘Danger’ and ‘Rollercoaster’. Since their debut, Arctic Lights have steadily built an international audience, with their music receiving radio play across Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australia, while attracting listeners through platforms including Spotify and Bandcamp. Their work has also received coverage from outlets including Hot Press, XS Noize and Echo Live, with their music described as everything from indie rock and dream pop to space rock, power pop and synth-pop. The duo’s musical backgrounds bring considerable experience to the project. Liam O’Callaghan previously fronted Cork band Bulkhead, while Edward Butt is a member of Cork’s Emperor of Ice Cream, who were signed to Sony Records in the 1990s. The pair have brought that experience together in Arctic Lights while maintaining complete creative independence. One of the defining characteristics of Arctic Lights is their DIY approach. The music, production, mastering, artwork and much of the visual identity surrounding the project are created in-house, allowing the duo complete creative control and the freedom to continually experiment with their sound and presentation. With a growing catalogue and a reputation for never quite making the same record twice, Arctic Lights continue to carve out their own space between alternative rock, indie and experimental music always looking for somewhere new to go next.
